What is FIRST® LEGO® League?

FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children ages 4-16 through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today’s students and teachers build a better future together. The program also emphasizes on FLL Core Values, which are values such as Teamwork, Inclusion etc. to be followed when participating in the program. Teams are evaluated and judged on their Core Values along with the robot & project areas.

FLL at Floris

Floris is fortunate to enjoy robust FLL participation every year. In 2022, an FLL team of Floris 5th and 6th graders won First Place in Robot Performance at the Statewide FLL competition held at James Madison University!

FLL “Explore” or FLL “Challenge”?

FLL Explore is a non-competitive division for students in grades 2-4.  Teams will build and motorize an Explore Lego set and solve a problem. The team model and poster will be presented at the FLL festival held during January-March. Explore team sizes are 2-6 members. New FIRST LEGO League Explore teams can expect to pay a total team cost of approximately $350-$400 (to be split among the team members) for team registration and a reusable LEGO Education SPIKE Essential set or LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 set.

FLL Challenge is a competitive division that requires both building and programming robots with missions to be completed, and solving a “Challenge Project” related to the season’s First In Show theme. Challenge teams compete at a regional qualifier in Nov-Dec with a chance to move to the State level tournament. This division requires dedicated coaches and can get hectic as the tournament date gets near. Challenge team sizes range between 2-10 members. New FIRST LEGO League Challenge teams can expect to pay a total team cost of approximately $800 for team registration (to be split among the team members), the Challenge Set, and a reusable robot kit of parts.

Support from Floris PTA

The PTA will help form teams based on interest. The FLL Chair will assist by connecting interested students, providing guidance on registering teams, and answering any questions along the way. Please contact florispta.fll@gmail.com if you would like assistance to have your child participate in First Lego League activities. (Note that FLL requires teams to be run by at least 2 parent/guardian coaches, so please indicate if you can coach a team as well).

If you require assistance organizing a FLL team for your child(ren) please fill out the interest form here: https://forms.gle/PQLLUHHQETeMcVmL6
